Power Factor Correction

Automatic Power Factor Correction is usually used in a medium, or large industrial, or commercial premises. Where it is known the electrical load could vary during operation.
The equipment is fitted with an electronic controller which measures the amplitude and power factor of the load continuously. It switches capacitors into or out of circuit to maintain the desired power factor.
The rating of the capacitor bank depends upon the types and size of the electrical equipment in use. A site visit is normal to carry out measurements, from which calculations are used to determine requirement.
Alternatively we could use information from your electricity bills, to calculate the total loading.
PQE regards any information supplied as confidential.
Automatic equipment is easy to install and maintain. It is very reliable and providing it is serviced annually, has an expected service life of 15 to 20 years. All internal components are replaceable, so that if a fault develops, rectification is simple and economic.
Automatic Power Factor Correction is usually installed in switch rooms or substations, making installation cost effective. It is quiet in operation and does not contain any components or commodities which are environmentally hazardous.
PQE manufactures a range of standard products, but can provide special designs when these do not fulfil your requirements. All components used are chosen for their reliability and durability. This results in our warranty claims being extremely small.
Operating voltages from 400 to 33,000 Volts can be design. The number and size of the capacitor stages is chosen to suit the site requirements. Reactive power ratings from 25 KVAr to 10,000 KVAr can be provided.
If you have large variable speed drives or other electronically controlled heavy loads, special filters may also be required if problems are to be avoided.
All our components can be supplied in kit form for the customer to build into a compartment of his switchboard. These include capacitors, power factor regulators, Contactors, Fuses etc.
Advice on layout, ventilation and control circuitry are available on request.
PQE are able to advice and assist customers to determine their requirements and design considerations regarding ventilation, dissipation and other design objectives.

Products for Panel Builders
Alternatively we can supply capacitor assemblies, often referred to as trays. These comprise of a galvanised steel plate on which are mounted capacitor(s), fuses and contactors (in Automatic Banks). The physical dimensions of the tray are designed to facilitate assembly into the customer’s switchboard.
Various capacitor ratings are available with voltage ratings from 380 to 690 Volts.
The most popular capacitor ratings are 25, 50 and 100 KVAr, but most alternative sizes can be supplied.
